The 3 Different Ways to Reset Your Tinder Account

There are three methods of resetting your account: the soft way, the hard way, and the 3-month rule.

1. The soft way (Soft reset)

The soft reset method is as simple as dangerous since it has been overused over the last years and has been flagged by Tinder since. It consists of deleting your account and creating a new one. I'd not recommend you to do it, but I've still included it in this guide for reference.

2. The hard way (Full reset)

This method is the most secure and most efficient one. This is the one I choose every time I want a fresh start (and the initial boost that comes with it).

To do a hard reset you will have to change a lot of things: a new email address, a new phone number, a new Google or Apple account.

3. The 3-month rule (GDPR reset)

This method is the most recent one, and one of the easiest ones. The only drawback is that it requires a lot of patience. 3 months, or 92 days, to be exact.

According to Tinder privacy policy:

To protect the safety and security of our users on and off our services, we implement a safety retention window of three months following account deletion. During this period, account information will be retained althougTinder privacy policyh the account will of course not be visible on the services anymore.

Theorically, you could get a fresh start by deleting your account and waiting 3-months before creating a new one. But there are a few catches that we will see in the next section.

The Best Way to Reset Your Tinder Account in 2021

The short answer is: do a hard reset. This is the most secure way to get a fresh start on Tinder.

But depending on what you value the most you may choose another solution:

  • If you value efficiency: do a hard reset,
  • If you are lazy: do a soft reset (at your own risk),
  • If you are patient: do a 3-month reset.

The reason why you should not do a soft reset

I'd not do a soft reset because this practice has been overused and flagged by Tinder to protect its community. Imagine if a scammer was able to get a brand new account by just deleting and creating a new one, would your experience on Tinder be great?

No.

That's why Tinder implemented in the last years some efficient methods to penalize and prevent this abuse. Those include shadowban or further verifications.

Tinder hard reset vs 3-month reset?

I would choose the hard reset 10 times. Because even though waiting 3 months seems appealing vs getting a new phone, it has some limitations.

First, the GPDR law forces companies to only erase your personal data, data that can identify you as an individual.

If your Tinder data relative to your Tinder ELO are anonymized, they don't have to delete it. This means that when you will create a new account, uploading the same pic with the same metadata, Tinder can restore your Tinder ELO and you will not benefit from the initial boost.

Second, analyzing the privacy policy of Tinder this time:

We delete or anonymize your information [...] unless the information must be kept for our legitimate business interests, such as fraud prevention and enhancing users' safety and security.
For example, information may need to be kept to prevent a user who was banned for unsafe behavior or security incidents from opening a new account.

If your account has been flagged in the past for breaking the community guidelines or being reported by other users, the 3-months reset will not work.

This means that if you were shadowbanned, waiting 3 months with of hope of getting a fresh start is illusory.

The main steps are summarised here:

  1. Open Tinder app.
  2. Go to settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap on "Delete Account".
  4. Tap on "Delete my Account".
  5. Tap on whatever reason you like or "SKIP" at the top.

How to uninstall Tinder?

  1. Go to settings on Android.
  2. Scroll down and tap "manage apps." You should then see a list of all your installed applications that are currently running or not activated.
  3. Select Tinder from the available options
  4. Select uninstall
  5. Once that's done, clean the cache to get rid of it for good!

Why should I wait for 24h before creating a new account?

You should wait at least 24h after deletion before creating a new account to avoid being flagged by Tinder algorithm as a spammer or bot.

In fact, creating a new account right away would be a spam signal sent to Tinder and you could end up shadowbanned.

Do I need a new phone to do a Tinder hard reset?

Now, there are 2 options depending on your situation:

  • You got another phone available that you can use for Tinder: use it.
  • You don't have another phone: do a factory reset of your phone.

Whenever you use the app, your device ID is passed through the request made to the Tinder server. Plus this information does not identify you as a person, so companies can keep it even after the deletion of your account.

If you don't have a new phone available, save your data and do a factory reset of your phone. This method works well on Android and is an easy alternative to root your phone.

The process differs slightly depending on your device but here is the process on iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open your phone settings.
  2. Go to "General".
  3. Scroll down till "Reset".
  4. Select "Erase All Content and Settings".

‌‌If you got an Android, here is one way of doing it:

  1. Open your phone settings.
  2. Go to "About Phone".
  3. Select "Factory reset".

How to create a new Apple id or Google account

Once that's done, the next step is to create a new Apple id or Google playstore account before downloading Tinder.

Before we get started, you will need a new email address.

To create a new Apple id, we recommend you follow this tutorial by Apple. Here are the main steps:

  1. Open the App Store and tap the sign-in button
  2. If iCloud is on, log out first. Then tap on "Create New Apple ID"
  3. Follow on-screen instructions using your NEW email address.
  4. Verify your email address.

To create a new Google account, you can check this tutorial. Here are the main steps:

  1. Go to the Settings of your phone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on the “Accounts” option.
  3. Tap on the “Add account” option at the bottom of your screen.
  4. Select “Google.”
  5. Tap on “Create account.”
  6. Follow on-screen instructions using your NEW email address.
  7. Tap the “I Agree” button to create your Google account.

What you should keep in mind while creating a new Tinder account if you want a full reset

This is the most important section because one mistake could ruin everything...

  1. Use a new email address.
  2. Use a new phone number.
  3. Do not link your previous Apple ID or Google account (hence install the app with a new account). See How to create a new Apple id or Google account to get more details.
  4. Do not link your social networks if they were linked to your previous account (Facebook, Instagram, Spotify).
  5. Do not use the exact same pics as before. Alter their metadata first. See this section for more info.

How to keep the same pics as before while resetting your account

The answer is short: clean the meta-data! This includes name, EXIF, size, ...

If you would like to use an old photo for your new Tinder account, follow these steps:

  1. Rename the file name of the photo so it doesn't match with the pic that you previously uploaded on Tinder.
  2. Clean EXIF data from your pictures using either google "remove EXIF online" or by downloading one of many free programs available (we recommend Photo ExifCleaner). This will remove geotag information such as GPS coordinates where images were taken which can lead back.
  3. Slightly resize it (or add black pixels) so the pic dimension doesn't match the previous pic.

That's it!

If I was you, I would also ask myself why did I want to keep using the same pics if I wasn't getting matches? If you're resetting your account there is a reason 😉

Even if Tinder is a great way to meet new people, but it's hard to stand out from the crowd. You can swipe for hours and never get a match. Why?

The problem is that most guys are using their phone camera and adding one or two photos of themselves looking good at best. This means they're only showing off the things they feel confident about and neglecting everything else. They forget that there's someone on the other side of those swipes who has no idea what you look like in real life, so your profile photo needs to be more than just an attractive picture of yourself; it also needs to show off your personality as well!

That's why I created ROAST, the most effective way to get matches on Tinder.
