What is a Tinder shadowban?
A shadowban is when your actions are restricted by Tinder without you being warned. For example, you could still be able to use the app, to swipe left and right. But your profile would not be shown to other users.
The consequences? You are wasting your time swiping because you will never match... I've been there... and it's terribly frustrating. Not knowing if you're not getting any matches because of your profile or Tinder will.
The worst thing being... it lasts almost forever!
How long does the Tinder shadowban last?
The shadowban lasts forever.
Yes, you heard me right. Once your account has been shadowbanned there is no escape. Except resetting your account, and I explain to you how to do it here.
That's why you want to avoid this at all costs.
To keep your account safe, I detailed in the next section the most common causes of shadowban on Tinder.
The reasons why you could be shadowbanned on Tinder
There are various reasons for ending shadowbanned but they are always linked to an infringement of Tinder terms of service and guidelines. In fact, Match Group shadowbanned you only to "protect" its community.
The main ones being:
- sending inappropriate texts,
- getting reported,
- or having disturbing pictures on your tinder profile (animal cruelty, too sexual pics)
How to test if you are shadowbanned or not
First, you can check if you have any of the following symptoms:
- You're actively swiping but you don't get any matches
- You have recently received a warning for inappropriate behavior
- Your number of likes is stagnating or if you have Tinder Gold/Platinum, there is no
- You're not getting any responses to your messages
If all the previous conditions are fulfilled, we recommend you reset your Tinder account. I'll explain to you how to do so in the next section.
To check if you have been shadowbanned, you can also delete your account and create a new one using model photos. If you still don't have any matches/likes, then you are shadowbanned.
Attention: not getting matches could also being the result of a low ELO score.
How to reset your account if you have been shadowbanned
Resetting your Tinder account is a long and tedious process (8 steps). In this tutorial, I'll help you to go through each step so you can get a fresh start (and your matches back)!
The method we will follow is the hard reset as it's the most effective one. I wrote another article - How to Reset Tinder in 2021 - that explains other methods to reset your account and helps you to choose the best depending on your situation. You may check it too before resetting your account.
Here is what you'll need to follow our tutorial and finally get your matches back:
- New phone number
- Fresh email address
- New Apple account (iOS) or Google account (Android)
- New IP address
- New smartphone device (optional)
- New pictures (optional)
Brief, a new life! (almost)
Tutorial to reset your Tinder account
Step 1: Delete your previous account
- Go to settings
- Scroll down till you reach the "Delete Account" button
- Select the "Delete my account" option
- Tap on "I want a fresh start"
Step 2: Uninstall Tinder from your device
You need to remove the Tinder app from your phone because you will need a new Apple / Google Account before installing the app.
Step 3: Clean your Phone data
If you can use another device, it's even better.
But sometimes, you just have one phone and you don't want to buy a brand new device just for Tinder. In that case, we recommend you to do a factory reset of your phone to clean the device id and use a new Google Play Store or Apple App Store account.
- Open your phone settings
- Go to "General"
- Scroll down till "Reset"
- Select "Erase All Content and Settings"
- Open your phone settings
- Go to "About Phone"
- Select "Factory reset"
Step 4: Get a new SIM card
You will need it to receive the token sent by Tinder to verify your account.
You can use burner phone numbers but you will not be able to re-authenticate if you get logged out.
This could also be useful to not use your previous IP address if you're using the mobile network of this new SIM card to access Tinder.
Step 5: Restart your WiFi router
Tinder tracks your IP address, hence you should not spoil all your efforts to reset your Tinder account by neglecting this.
To get a fresh IP, the simplest way is to restart your WiFi router. Once that's done, you can check your IP by googling "What's my IP" or use this website.
Using the mobile network of your new SIM card could be a backup solution.
Step 6: Create a new Apple / Google account
Before installing Tinder you need to create a new Apple / Google account to connect to the store.
Do NOT link your previous email, nor your previous credit card.
Step 7: Reinstall Tinder
Go to your Appstore and reinstall the app.
Step 8: Create a new account
This step is crucial. Create a new account using a new phone number and a new email address (this is super important, otherwise Tinder will restore your previous parameters and you will be still shadowbanned... game over).
Don't link your social accounts (facebook, instagram, spotify) if you previously used them with Tinder.
Now it's time to upload your new pics and write your bio. You should not neglect this step. Being able to create a brand new Tinder account is a lifetime opportunity.
Can I keep my old photos after being shadowbanned?
If you want to keep your old photos, it's doable. But is it really what you want?
Is it worth it to spend so much time and effort in creating a brand new Tinder account without changing your pics?
If before getting shadow-banned, you put the work in and managed to create a strong profile. Keep your pics!
But if you're still using those random pics that are older than your grandma... then you probably shouldn't... Just saying.
If you want to use your old pictures on Tinder, follow those steps:
- Rename the picture.
- Clean the EXIF data. You can google "remove EXIF data online" and you'll find plenty of tools.
- Slightly resize the picture or add a black pixel.
